eSIM for the USA: what to know before you fly

The USA is the destination where people most regret not sorting connectivity out before boarding, because almost everything runs on the phone: rides, tickets, maps and bookings.

Coverage

Plans run on the major local networks. Coverage is broad in cities and along main highways; in national parks and rural areas signal can drop, and that is true of local carriers too.

How much data to take

• One week of normal use: 3 to 5 GB is usually enough.
• Two weeks, or heavy maps and ride hailing: 10 GB gives room.
• Family trip with the phone as a hotspot: consider 20 GB.

Details that catch people out

• Many ride hailing and delivery apps confirm by SMS. Keep your usual SIM active just to receive it.
• Hotel and airport Wi-Fi often asks for a sign up that also arrives by SMS or e-mail.
• iPhones sold in the USA from the 14 on have no SIM tray. A phone bought there is eSIM only.
