How much data you actually use on a trip

A simple way to pick the right plan without paying for data you will not use.

Sep 05, 2026

Most people buy too much. On a trip your phone does three things all day: maps, messaging and social media. None of them is heavy.

What each activity uses, per hour

ActivityRough usage
Maps and navigation5 to 10 MB per hour
Messaging, text and voice notes10 to 20 MB per hour
Instagram and TikTok150 to 400 MB per hour
Video call300 to 500 MB per hour
HD video streaming1 to 3 GB per hour
E-mail and light browsing10 to 30 MB per hour

The practical maths

  • Short trip, light use: maps, messaging and a few photos. 1 to 2 GB a week.
  • Normal trip: the above plus social media and a few video calls. 3 to 5 GB a week.
  • Heavy use: streaming, remote work or hotspot for other people. 8 GB a week and up.

Download the offline map before you fly. That alone cuts a good part of daily usage.

If it runs out

You buy another plan for the same destination and install it right away. No need to wait for the first one to expire.
