When to buy an eSIM and when the validity starts
The question that makes people leave it to the last minute for no reason.
Sep 07, 2026
The most common question before buying is whether the plan starts counting on the day you pay. It does not.
Validity starts on the first connection
The plan starts when the eSIM first connects to a network at the destination, not when you pay and not when you install. A 15 day plan bought two weeks ahead still has all 15 days when you land.
So when should you buy
As soon as the trip is booked. Buying early has three upsides and no downside: you install calmly on good home internet, you find out in time if your phone has any compatibility issue, and you do not depend on airport wifi on the day.
And if the trip changes date
While the eSIM has not been installed, the refund is full. Once installed, the plan has already been issued by the carrier and cannot be taken back, so install when the trip is confirmed.
The calm path: buy when you book, install a few days before flying, and turn data on when you land.
